The airport almost every Galapagos trip begins and ends at, a runway laid by the United States Air Force in 1942, and the ferry channel across to Santa Cruz: Baltra is flat, dry and roughly twenty-seven square kilometres. Its land iguanas were wiped out during the war years and later brought back from North Seymour, where a population had been moved in the 1930s.
