A wooden staircase of three hundred and seventy two steps, Pinnacle Rock standing out of the water at the end of it, and two crescent bays on either side of the isthmus below: Bartolome is small, almost bare and the most photographed island in the archipelago. Galapagos penguins nest at the foot of Pinnacle Rock, at the southern edge of their range. The view from the summit is the one picture most visitors have seen before they arrive. Two visitor sites and both are short: the climb takes about forty minutes, the snorkel below Pinnacle Rock about the same. Bartolome is a morning rather than a day, and it is usually paired with Sullivan Bay on Santiago across the channel.
