Fur seals asleep in the shade of eroded rock arches at Puerto Egas, a lava field at Sullivan Bay that cooled less than a hundred and thirty years ago and still shows the ropes and swirls, Buccaneer Cove where whaling crews took on water and cut their names into the cliffs: Santiago carries more visible human history than any island except Floreana, and the goats those ships left behind were only cleared in 2006. Four visitor sites spread around a large island, and no single departure sees all four. Sullivan Bay is a walk over bare lava with no shade and no beach, which suits some travellers and not others. Espumilla Beach and Buccaneer Cove sit on the far side and appear on fewer circuits.
