About South Plaza

A carpet of red sesuvium across the whole island, land iguanas sitting under the Opuntia waiting for a pad to fall, and swallow-tailed gulls nesting on the cliff at the far end: South Plaza is an uplifted slab about a kilometre long and two hundred metres wide, tilted so that one side is a low beach and the other a thirty-metre drop. The only known hybrids of land and marine iguana live here. Forty-one of our itineraries call at South Plaza across 13 ships, from $1,797 per person, on trips of 3 to 14 nights.

The sesuvium is red in the dry season and green after rain, so photographs taken in March look nothing like photographs taken in October. The trail is short and the cliff edge is unfenced, which makes the site unsuitable for anyone unsteady on uneven lava.
